Africa & the Middle East a big focus at POWER-GEN 2016

Orlando, FL – After hosting a panel last year, ISI was back at the world’s largest power generation event. There were over 18 thousand attendees from over 100 countries, 1,200 exhibitors, and 326 speakers.

There was a particularly strong presence from African and Middle Eastern countries this year, including Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana, and Tanzania, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. All of these countries brought high-level delegations from government and the private sector. During the event, ISI was able to help connect many of its clients attending PowerGen with members of the international delegations.

ISI’s Director of Client Services, Ian Oliver, attended the “investment Opportunities in Ethiopia, Ghana, and South Africa” breakfast seminar. Mr. Mekuria Lemma, Head of Strategy and Planning, Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), opened the seminar and noted that the EEP wants to generate more power through competitive tendering via IPP and EPC projects. Also speaking at the seminar was Mr. Theophilus Asante-Darko, General Manager Business Development, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), who discussed in detail the Ghana Power Compact between the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the Government of Ghana and the opportunities it provides for U.S companies. Finally, Brian McCleary, Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in South Africa, noted that the South African government’s IPP office intends to focus more on its gas to power program. With power deficits in many African countries and the various global initiatives to address this, there are a multitude of opportunities for US companies in the power sector to expand into these markets.
