Philadelphia, PA - ISI Consultants attended the 68th AACC annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Labs Expo July 31st to August 4th. With over 20,000 attendees, 73 sessions, 155+ speakers, and over 750 exhibitors, the expo was one of the largest of its kind and ISI staff were on hand to discuss opportunities in the Middle East and Africa for companies from the laboratory medicine and healthcare sectors. Of particular interest were the need to address disease outbreaks and premature deaths.
Sir Richard Peto, MSC, FRS took the stage on Monday as a Plenary speaker to discuss his vision to decrease the rate of premature deaths by half. He noted that the global community has “made progress on child mortality now, but still have quite a bit of work to do on mortality at middle age.” While the worldwide premature death rates have declined, with the use of low-cost management opportunities Peto believes can lower these rates by targeting four major causes of premature deaths, tobacco, alcohol, adiposity, and war. ISI Consultants sees private sector healthcare companies have a unique opportunity to work in Africa & the Middle East to address these issues.
There continues to be a need for clinical labs in the Middle East and Africa. In South Africa, as an example, labs are focusing on the detection of HIV/AIDS and TB, with mobile labs becoming more common to help address the needs of patients in rural areas. And throughout the region, there are opportunities for suppliers of quality used lab equipment. Opening a new lab can cost anywhere from $500,000 to several million dollars and having access to used medical equipment could significantly increase access to screening and diagnostics for local populations.
