Talking African Infrastructure in the MidWest

Kansas City, MO - ISI was invited by the U.S. Department of Commerce to lead a roundtable discussion with companies from Kansas and Missouri on 'Infrastructure Opportunities in Africa.'

The event was attended by representatives from companies in, and suppliers to, the construction, architecture, engineering, water and wastewater sectors, interested in expanding their business in Africa.

As the fastest urbanizing region in the world, with a population set to double by 2040 and over $80billion of funding on infrastructure per year, Africa represents a tremendous opportunity for U.S. business. However, since Africa is made up of 54 distinct countries, all with varying levels of infrastructure development and unique challenges, it is critical for companies to understand where the best opportunities are for their specific products or services.

ISI's Client Services Director, Ian Oliver, started the discussion by giving an overview of the region's key target markets for various types of infrastructure projects. He then went on to discuss several strategies for successful business development in Africa as well as common risks and how to avoid them. This opened up the discussion, with participants eager to share their personal experiences and learn from each other's successes and mistakes.

The discussion then moved on to effective international marketing techniques and Mr. Oliver was able to share a number of resources that U.S. companies can use, to support their marketing efforts and gain valuable market intelligence including several government programs through the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The meeting concluded with Mr. Oliver summing up "While the opportunities are wide-ranging, navigating the African marketplace can be challenging for companies of all sizes. However, with a well thought through plan in place, U.S. companies can be well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities cost effectively and while minimizing their risk."
